India is known for its offbeat traditional wear for women that not only look graceful, but define a woman’s beauty in ways like probably no dress could. Indian salwar kameez is of those outfits known for their charm and they have been ruling the Indian fashion world since the contemporary days.

Salwar kameez is basically a dress that can be divided into three parts. The first part is the kurti – which is a long top covering the body of the wearer from shoulders to thighs or lower leg. The second part is the lose pajama that is worn under the kurta to cover the legs. The third part is the dupatta, which is about two and half meters in length and is worn as a stole over the dress. These three parts of the dress can be designed in various ways for varying looks. The most basic types of Indian salwar kameez are:

The short kurta – This is a smart fitting and recently developed style of the Indian salwar suit. Mostly suitable for slim women, these look very trendy and are very practical too. The kurta of the dress is usually not longer than a few inches down the waist.

The indo western style- This is another one of the latest developed styles of the Indian salwar suit that, as the name itself suggests, takes inspiration from the western designs and mixes it in the indo- western format for a more stylish and smart look. The pajama in such salwar suits are replaced by a well fitting pant or legging and the kurti is smartly tailored for sensible style.

Churidar kurta – This is a more flamboyant style of salwar kameez. It is very popular among all age groups, especially the middle aged women, who like to wear their dresses in a more ethnic style. They maybe printed, plain or be purchased in embroidered salwar kameez style.

Anarkali style- Anarkali is perhaps the most royal and elaborate style of salwar kameez. Currently this style is very popular as wedding salwar suit. Here the dress is layered and stitched in frock style, representing the contemporary India – especially of the Mughal period. They have recently made a come back in the fashion world literally after decades, and are definitely here to stay.

The Indian salwar kameez can be designed in various other styles as well. The trends and styles in vogue vary from region to region, and also- as one can guess – from time to time. You can purchase Indian salwar kameez as a ready made dress, or you can get it tailor made out of unstitched design pieces to suit your needs. Lots of women these days are coming up with their own styles and are mixing and matching the various design formats to create newer combination of this elegant and classic Indian wear.
